Deleting your account
An organizer can delete their own account at any time. This page says exactly what that does, what it does not do, and where to start.
- Yours to doNo email to us, no waiting on a person.
- Not the householdThe households you organize stay with their organizers.
- Straight awayYour name and email go the moment you confirm.
How to delete it
Sign in as an organizer and open Delete your account. You will be asked to sign in first, because this is the only way we can tell it is really you: we will not delete an account because somebody sent us an email asking us to.
You can also reach it from the account menu on your households screen, or from Household settings, under Your account. In the iPhone app it is in the same place. Deleting your account asks you to type DELETE, and it cannot be undone.
If you own a household, hand it on first. A household always needs an owner, so we will not let you leave one without one. Make another organizer the owner, or archive or delete the household, and then delete your account. The screen names the households that are in the way.
What stops
- Your name and email
- Removed the moment you confirm, from your account and from every invitation that carried them, and replaced with a blank record nobody can read, including us. The one thing we keep is a do-not-send entry, and only if an email to you ever bounced or was marked as spam, so we never email that address again.
- Signing in
- Your sign-in identity is deleted. You are signed out here now, and every other device is signed out as soon as that identity is deleted, which is usually within a minute. Signing in with that address afterwards does not bring the account back. It makes nothing at all.
- Your organizer access
- You are removed as an organizer from every household you belonged to. You cannot open any of them again.
- Invitations you sent
- Any organizer invitation you sent that nobody has accepted stops working.
- Email we had queued for you
- Anything we had not sent you yet is cancelled. We do not email you afterwards to say your account was deleted; there would be nowhere to send it.
- Your email choices
- The settings for which emails you get are deleted with the rest.
What stays
Deleting your account is not deleting a household. Those are different things and they have different buttons.
- The households you organized
- They keep their plan, their calendar, their helpers and their other organizers. Nothing a helper signed up for changes.
- A blank record where you were
- A household's own history refers to whoever made each change. We keep that record so the history still makes sense, with your name and email taken out of it. It names nobody.
- Content-free records
- Small operational records with opaque identifiers and times, no names and no family details. They prove the deletion happened and are removed on their own schedule.
- A do-not-send entry, if you ever had one
- If an email we sent you bounced, or you marked one as spam, we keep a note of that address so we never send to it again. Deleting it would let us start emailing an address that asked us to stop. It is one address and nothing else, and it goes when the household it belongs to is deleted.
If you want a household gone as well, delete the household first, from Household settings, then delete your account. A deleted household is fully removed within seven days.
How long it takes
- Your name and email
- Immediately
- Replaced the moment you confirm.
- Your access
- Immediately
- Every organizer membership is removed in the same moment.
- Your sign-in identity
- Minutes
- Deleted right away in almost every case. If our sign-in provider cannot be reached, we retry automatically each day until it is gone.
- The blank record
- Kept
- So the households you organized keep their own history. It holds no name and no address.
If something goes wrong
Write to us and say what happened. A real person reads every message.
We cannot delete an account for somebody who writes in, because we cannot tell from an email who is asking. If you cannot sign in, tell us and we will help you get back in first.
